Privacy Policy

What we collect, why, and what you can do about it. Last updated 6 September 2026.

In short: you can use the communication tools without giving us anything. If you make an account, we keep only what is needed to run it, and you can delete it whenever you want.

What we collect, and why

Without an account: nothing that identifies you. Your saved phrases, notes, favourites and accessibility settings stay in your own browser and are never sent to us.

With an account, we collect:

  • Email address — to sign you in and let you reset your password.
  • Name — to address you in the app.
  • Mobile number — to help recover your account and to contact you about the service. We do not send marketing messages and we do not sell or share your number.
  • Your preferences (language, caption text size, contrast, vibration) — so the platform works the same way on your other devices.
  • Saved and custom phrases — only if you choose to sync them, so they appear on your other devices.

DHI Services

If you offer a service, your public profile shows your name, photo, service, skills, experience, pricing, and your city and general area. It never shows your full address, and we never ask for one.

Your phone number stays private. It is not on your public profile, it is not sent to a customer’s browser, and it is not in our search results. A customer can only see it if you accept their request and then choose to share it with them, and you can stop sharing at any time.

Messages between a customer and a provider are private between those two people. Our admin team can read a conversation when someone reports it, and we may have to provide messages if the police or a court lawfully require it. We delete old messages, keeping only those attached to a report we are still looking into.

Work requests and reviews are kept while your account exists. Reviews you write are shown publicly with the name on your account.

Verification documents

Service providers may choose to upload documents so our team can check a profile before approving it. This is optional — you can offer a service without uploading anything. The documents may include a government photo ID, a disability certificate, or a skill certificate.

We do not store any ID number. There is no field anywhere in our system that holds an Aadhaar number or any other document number. We ask you to cover the first eight digits before photographing an Aadhaar card, and never to type the number into a message.

Why we collect them: only to check that a service profile is genuine before it goes live. We use them for nothing else.

Who sees them: only the Deaf Help India admin team. They are stored privately, are never shown on your profile, are never sent to customers, and cannot be opened by anyone else. An admin views one through a link that expires after one minute.

How long we keep them: we delete the document once we have decided, and in any case within 30 days of the decision. What we keep afterwards is only the decision itself — that a profile was checked, when, and by whom. You can delete an uploaded document yourself at any time from your service profile.

A disability certificate tells us something private about your health. You never have to give us one. If you would rather not, do not upload it — it will not stop your profile being approved.

What we never collect

We do not record or store what you say, what is captioned, or the content of your conversations. Speech recognition runs in your own browser and the text is never sent to us. We do not track you across other websites, and we do not sell personal data to anyone.

We do not store Aadhaar numbers or any other identity document number, we do not ask for your home address, and we do not take payments, so we never hold your card or bank details. Nobody from Deaf Help India will ever ask you for an OTP, PIN or password.

Who else can see it

Our data is stored with Supabase, which hosts our database and handles sign-in, and the site runs on Vercel. They process data on our instructions only. Speech recognition is performed by your browser, and browsers made by Google and Apple may process audio on their own servers — that is between you and your browser maker, and we receive none of it.

How long we keep it

Account data is kept while your account exists. Delete your account and we erase your profile, preferences and synced phrases. Anything stored only in your browser is removed when you clear your browser data.

For DHI Services: verification documents are deleted within 30 days of our decision. Messages are deleted after a limited period, except where they are needed for a report we are still investigating. Records we must keep for safety — that a profile was approved, that an account was suspended and why — are kept in an admin log so we can explain our own decisions later.

Your rights

Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act you may ask us for a summary of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or complete it, ask us to erase it, withdraw consent you previously gave, and raise a grievance. Most of this you can do yourself on the Profile page. For anything else, contact us using the details below.

Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it: delete your account, and the data goes with it.

Children

Indian law treats anyone under 18 as a child and requires verifiable consent from a parent or guardian before their personal data is processed. We do not knowingly create accounts for under-18s. If you are under 18, please use the platform without an account — Emergency Help, Hospital Help and the accessibility tools all work without one. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

If something goes wrong

If personal data is ever exposed, we will notify the Data Protection Board of India and affected users as the law requires. To raise a privacy concern, contact our grievance contact below. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

Changes

We will update this page when our practices change, and the date at the top will show when. See also our Terms and Conditions.
